GHOST SONATA

Markus Öhrn is one of Europe’s most intriguing directors, proposing a bold theatre poetics of his own, inspired by video-art. His trilogy – Conte d’amour, We Love Africa and Africa Loves Us and Bis zum Tod – was featured at some of the most prestigious European theatre festivals. Now Öhrn is staging August Strindberg’s Ghost Sonata – his first handling of a classical drama text, his previous productions having been based on his own scripts. We will see him break into Strindberg’s text; it is noteworthy that they are compatriots. This punk take on Strindberg, indeed all of Öhrn’s punk theatre, is an experience that can alter one’s view of theatre and its subversive power once and for all.

Translation of the play into Polish subsidized by the Swedish Arts Council.

MARKUS ÖHRN'S HOME TOUR

Original video material created as part of the pandemic project Home. An artist's museum.

We are guided through Markus Öhrn's house by the ghost of his beloved grandmother. We see the amazing place where the artist formed his personality. We see places and objects especially dear to his heart and important in his creative process. We learn about the secret sources of his inspiration.

The memory of the outstanding, legendary artist Markus Öhrn is being created in front of the viewer's eyes and illuminates the Scandinavian darkness.

It happened so long ago that even the oldest inhabitants cannot remember when. Also, the place did not look like it does today: the land was on one of two banks, by a river which was called a border. A very old woman called Granny lived there. No one remembered where she came from or when she arrived at the border. They said that she was in contact with the Evil One. However, the memory of Granny has not faded. Some people even say from time to time that they see an old lady in the window of a house on the shore. They say she is showing visitors around. But who would believe them?

Yet, if you are curious, getting to Granny's house is not easy either. You need to go down with water, where baths are prepared for people. Do not let the twisty road deceive you. Stop right at the metal crates, and then turn your gaze to the left. If you are lucky, you will see the guide. Then she will lead you onwards, straight into the heart of the story.
