Małgorzata Szczęśniak

scenographer and costume designer

Małgorzata Szczęśniak graduated from the Cracow Arts High School in 1972 and went on to gain a degree at the Department of Philosophy and Psychology of the Jagiellonian University, where she also completed her PhD.

She studied scenography at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow in the years 1981-1984. In 1990 she took part in the Scenography Quadriennale in Prague and in 1994 in the Young Scenographers Showcase in Katowice. In 2008 an exhibition of the artist’s designs titled Pojawia sie i znika bez śladu (It Appears and Vanishes Without a Trace) took place in La Bellone in Brussels. Photos from the exhibition have been published in a book of the same name.

Małgorzata Szczesniak has been Krzysztof Warlikowski’s regular collaborator since the staging of his first play in 1992. She has created the stage design for all of his theater and opera works. She has also designed for other directors including Mark Fieldor, Grzegorz Jarzyna and Ewa Wycichowska.
She has been a part of the Nowy Teatr team since 2008.
