Jacek Poniedziałek

He is a theatre and film actor, director and translator, and a graduate of the Acting Department at the Ludwik Solski State Drama School in Kraków (PWST).

In 1992, two years after his graduation, he began his collaboration with Krzysztof Warlikowski. Their first shows were staged at PWST in Kraków: White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky and The Bald Soprano by Eugène Ionesco. Since then, he has appeared in almost all of Warlikowski’s shows.

His characters have always been distinguished by great intensity and expressiveness. Directors emphasize his strong personality and his extraordinary precision in building a character, while simultaneously maintaining a certain sense of distance between himself and the role.

Poniedziałek has also been involved in numerous translations and theatrical adaptations. He translated plays directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski: Cleansed by Sarah Kane, Krum and Suitcase Packers by Hanoch Levin, Angels in America by Tony Kushner, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, and Nickel Stuff by Bernard-Marie Koltès. His translations have been used by multiple Polish theatres and have been published in the theatre monthly Dialog.

2010 saw the release of Renata Kim's interview with Jacek Poniedziałek in her book Wyjście z cienia (Exit from the Shade), while in 2012, a collection of his translations of Tennessee Williams plays was published (A Streetcar Named Desire and other plays). Poniedziałek also translated Tango. My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels (released in Poland in 2013), an autobiography by transgender author Justin Vivian Bond, whose character he played in Krzysztof Warlikowski's Warsaw Cabaret.
