How to tell the truth in a reality of petrified imagination, emotional manipulation and widespread avoidance of responsibility? Who, to whom and how should it be told? Who, when and why would they even want to listen to it? Our greed for a sense of mission, our narcissistic thirst for rightness, our constant striving for superficial gratification, are responsible for the success of modern forms of propaganda. No one would put up with the truth today, because the truth requires time, focus and permission to step out of one's comfort zone. The truth is so unbearable today that it can only be heard in the margins, to which all those who do not nod to the current consensus have been exiled.

The play refers to the correspondence between Claude Eatherly and Günther Anders during the years 1959-1961. The former was the Air Force officer who gave the 'Go Ahead' command launching the bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. After the war, as a result of his tormented conscience, he joined the peace movement and questioned the legitimacy of the arms race, for which he was placed in a psychiatric hospital against his will. Anders was a philosopher of the 'atomic age' who decided to support Eatherly in his ideology and his struggle against the power of the state. As a German Jew, he and his wife Hanna Arendt had to flee from the Holocaust to the United States, a country against which he then had to stand up.

Like contemporary whistleblowers, Eatherly dared to say something that was meant to remain implicit, off-screen, beyond the interest and memory of his contemporaries. Does the same fate await anyone who wishes to simply, and without restraint, say what they think?

[Smiling boy]
