Contemporary theatrical improvisation techniques draw wholesale on methods developed by Viola Spolin, who in Chicago of the 20^th century helped emigrants, single mothers and victims of domestic violence using methods considered innovative at the time. This was not just work in groups, but involved listening, respect, lack of hierarchies and the conviction that life in communities cannot be based on an ideology of domination, prejudice, greed and dishonesty. Using games she herself invented, Spolin created an education system which used play and exercises to develop collaborative skills, teaching people how to listen and hear one another. These are not games in which anyone wins or loses, but instead learn how to cooperate on an equal footing.
