The performance is inspired by H.D. Thoreau’s Walden; or, Life in the Woods and the cinema of moral anxiety, especially the films of Krzysztof Kieślowski, and Andrzej Wajda.

Contrasting Thoreau's nineteenth-century manifesto about a simple life in harmony with nature and the cinema of our parents' generation, which reacted directly to the social and political events happening in Poland in the 1970s and 1980s, we want to discover whether morality, family, work, community, and nature are now only discredited slogans from another era or whether they are currently undergoing a dynamic metamorphosis.

The two sources of inspiration are combined in the play’s lonely protagonist – regardless of whether his natural environment is a metropolitan society or the romantic wilderness of a forest lake.

In our performance, Walden is a story about disappearance, withdrawal from life, and – in the context of the cinema of moral anxiety – a gesture of civil disobedience. You can see our project as a perverse fantasy about living without people, as well as an equally dark fantasy about living among them.
