‘The Sky of Stone Instead of Stars’ is a modern theatrical project, which cross over historical theme and radical, scenic experiment. Director Krzysztof Garbaczewski and author Marcin Cecko were inspired by the novel “The Stony Sky” written by Jerzy Krzysztoń. It’s a history of Warsaw Uprising told by civilian, who have been hidden in a basement during the uprising time. The creators of this production construct the world, where isolation, clamming up and struggle for life become an universal metaphor of contemporary dilemmas of human existence. The production doesn’t show us a historical time, it rather broaches an issue of postmemory, described by Marianne Hirsch as a second – generation memory that is belated, secondary and displaced form of cultural memory in tension with personal memory. How does the Warsaw Uprising commit to memory of “the second” and “the third” generation? Is the Warsaw Uprising “still alived” or is it only a nostalgic reminiscence? ‘The Sky of Stone Instead of Stars’ also tells us the story of experienced and reconstructed city, which is similar to a broken bone. We still find live bombs and shrapnels in a metaphorical city’s body, but on the other hand we live in and dream about development and the future better than the past.
