What Syria? A Women’s Revolution Against Religious Fundamentalists

The Common-Room Free entry

Imagine that in the Middle East, in war-torn Syria, there exists an enclave where women are guaranteed equal rights and are far more present in political and social life than women in democratic countries of the West. Equal rights and the ability to self-organize are also guaranteed to all ethnic and religious groups, and the system is based on direct democracy, where every resident has a say in shaping the constitution and everyday life. Such a place does exist! Until recently it was home to 4 million people: the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), commonly known as Rojava. But if you think such a place would be a natural partner for the Western world, unfortunately you are mistaken.

Since December 2024, the United States, European countries, and Israel have once again been reshaping the Middle East. With the support of Turkey and the USA, Syria’s long-time dictator Bashar al-Assad was removed from power and replaced by Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former leader of the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda. The joy following the overthrow of the hated dictator quickly evaporated when militias subordinate to al-Sharaa committed mass killings of religious minorities—Alawites and Druze—in 2025.

From January 2026 onward, these same criminal formations, now operating as government forces, have been carrying out operations against the Kurdish community and Syria’s autonomous regions. Despite this, leaders of the USA and Europe recognized al-Sharaa—until recently wanted for terrorist activity and for the killing of civilians in Syria and Iraq—as the legitimate president of Syria. In doing so, they gave him the green light to subjugate DAANES, leading to further killings, displacement, and a humanitarian catastrophe. As a result of brutal attacks, Rojava—and the values it embodies—may disappear from the map of the world for good.

What is the connection between ethnic cleansing in Syria and the West’s plan to attack Iran? Must Syria turn into a mono-religious, fundamentalist dictatorship? What is the Women’s Revolution, what does it look like, and why should we defend its achievements?

Does Rojava have a chance to become a guiding light and a model solution for the region? We will discuss this—and much more—this Thursday!

The meeting will be led by people who have experienced the functioning of DAANES from the inside and have supported Rojava’s women’s revolution since its inception.

The meeting is organized as part of the Days of Solidarity with Rojava: Resistance Is Life, Life Is Resistance!
