Wandering in search of a home: The Ithaca Project

Project supported of the Creative Europe programme of the European Union

The world order determines the place of a human being. Ancient Greek tradition, stories of gods and heroes, religion and history - mythology established boundaries that mortals were not allowed to cross.  It defined the standards. At the same time, the knowledge derived from it was not orthodox - it was open to polemics and critical discourse, and provided a field for expression and the creation of new themes. A field of artistic creativity. This is how the heritage of European culture was formed.

The project marks a new axis linking West, East and South, deconstructing the prevailing binarism forcing a choice between East and West on the one hand, and North and South on the other. The new axis does not cease to be political: it is a migratory line drawn by the pontoons moored at the shore overloaded with Refugees, illegal crossings in trucks over yet another, ever higher border wall, to the dream destination - the land that was supposed to be the Promised Land. It is an axis of a permanent search for a place for oneself, an eternal wandering seeking home and an attempt to return to where one has not yet been. After all, how can one return home when one does not know where it is? Where are we when we think of home? Is home even a geographical concept?

It is an obsessive vision of a world in a state of disintegration, struck by chaotic acts so extreme in their cruelty that it seemed impossible to repeat them. The East becomes a transit, on the one hand as if in the middle of the road, on the other with the entanglements of Europe. The story begins 'in Poland, or nowhere'. The story begins where the dead and the stories they did not tell are buried.

Conceived in this way, the discussion with the theme of the journey brought down to a crisis situation, begins to reveal cultural clichés about the founding, ancient myths behind modern European history. It questions what is visible and explores what is beneath. By rejecting the symmetrical dynamics of the relationship between the two poles, a space opens up for a performative social laboratory - a place where collective history and the individual experience of young artists collide.  In the gap between the presentations of the artistic narrative led by Krzysztof Warlikowski's international team, a place will be created in which contemporary Telemachus and Penelope, whose motivations are sometimes difficult to read, will have their say. It is a performative reckoning with tradition and memory by exploring the way people respond to and are responsible for each other.

The project will include:

The performance Odyssey. A Story for Hollywood, directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski. Premiere: 4 June 2021
